Estradiol in Men: Why You Need Some (and Not Too Much)
Estradiol supports libido, bones, and joints in men — but too much or too little causes symptoms.
The role of estradiol in men
Roughly 20–40 pg/mL is the comfortable range for most men. Estradiol supports libido, mood, bone density, and joint health.
Too high, too low
High estradiol — common in heavier men due to aromatase activity in fat tissue — causes water retention, mood swings, and reduced libido. Very low estradiol (often from over-aggressive aromatase inhibitor use) causes joint pain, low libido, and bone-density loss.
What to do
Body-composition work is the highest-leverage estradiol lever. Boron, zinc, and managing alcohol all modestly modulate it. Avoid self-prescribing AIs without bloodwork.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I block estrogen?
- Almost never without bloodwork and a physician's guidance. Low estradiol causes its own set of problems.
- Does belly fat raise estrogen?
- Yes — visceral fat is the body's main aromatase site. Leaning out lowers estradiol naturally.
